Gynecomastia is a benign enlargement of the breast in males with glandular and fatty tissue hypertrophy. Cosmetic surgery for gynecomastia is the removal of glandular tissue and excess fat, which results in the chest becoming flatter and being given a masculine outline by emphasizing the muscles.

Where to start?

The first step to take is to have a consultation with a plastic surgeon in order to find out how to achieve the vision desired by you in an operative way. In the course of the consultation, you will be introduced to all the options that are specific to your gynecomastia case. What is gynecomastia? What is gynecomastia reduction mammoplasty?

Gynecomastia is a surgery that takes about one to one-and-a-half hours, with the patients often staying in the clinic overnight under medical supervision.

Recovery can take several weeks and the end result is noticeable after about three to six months. If performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, gynecomastia surgery results in a significant, almost immediate improvement, with minimal scars.

This type of surgery is performed under general anesthesia and may involve a combination of the following procedures:

  • incision around the nipples to remove excess glandular tissue;
  • liposuction to remove excess fat;
  • possible widening of the incisions and repositioning of the nipples, if there is loose skin that needs removal.

Depending on your needs, as well as the technique used by the surgeon, the incisions in reduction mammoplasty can be made at the edge of the areola or within the armpit. At the same time, the chest will be sculpted and outlined to restore the natural appearance of your body.

Preparation for gynecomastia surgery

Your plastic surgeon will carefully explain to you all aspects of the procedure. Before the surgery itself, you will be given specific guidance regarding the condition of gynecomastia, which include:

  • pre-operative guidelines, diagnostic tests and medications (if necessary);
  • general instructions and medications for the day of surgery itself;
  • specific information concerning the selected anesthesia.

You will be asked to sign a form confirming to your surgeon that you fully understand the treatment you will be undergoing and are aware of the potential risks and potential complications. Possible risks of gynecomastia removed surgically are: bleeding, infection and poor healing, loss of sensitivity.

As with any surgery, there are risks related to the anesthesia. The decision on the type of anesthesia will be made according to the specifics of the procedure, the patient's preferences and the surgeon's recommendations. These and other aspects of the surgery will be discussed with you before you give your consent for the operation.

It is completely natural to be anxious before a gynecomastia surgery. Tell your surgeon how you feel and ask any questions you may have about the risks related to the gynecomastia surgical treatment procedure. The surgeon, as well as the medical staff, will fully take care of your stay in the clinic as well as your safety.

Recovery after gynecomastia surgery

After the surgery, your doctor will require that you should wear, for about 1 month (around the clock), a special elastic waistcoat to help minimize swelling and maintain the new chest contours. Dressings and bandages are also used to cover the cuts, which need to be replaced frequently.

In order to drain any excess fluid or blood a thin small tube attached to an external collector bag can be placed temporarily under the skin.

After a week, you will need to visit the clinic for a check-up.

After the procedure avoid, as far as possible, stretching, exercising or lifting heavy objects for six weeks. Be warned that, in rare cases, you may experience pain when you put your seat belt on in a vehicle, so you should resume driving or traveling after the pain has gone (this may take several weeks).
